Skilling business in tough times

This report contains the results of a survey conducted by the Australian Industry Group in conjunction with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu on Australian business skilling intentions for 2009/10. Almost 500 CEOs in the manufacturing, construction and services sectors participated in the survey which was conducted in July 2009. The overall objective of this study was to gain an understanding of the impact of current global economic conditions on company demand for skilled labour and the capacity of companies to engage in workforce skills development. The study measures the extent of the impact at a broad level and also in terms of training budgets and approaches to training. It measures the extent of skills shortages and identifies the types of skills considered to be lacking. The study looks at the expectations companies have of university graduates and the implications for universities in setting priorities for future graduates. Finally, it explores the skills needed by companies to respond to climate change and considers these skills needs from both an occupational and a technical perspective.
